Gambling has a negative expected return over time. That is the design, not a run of bad luck, and every page on this site is written on that assumption. This page is the one place we cover help in full.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Betting more than you decided to, or more often than you meant to
- Chasing a loss with a larger stake to get back to even
- Gambling with money set aside for something else, or borrowing to gamble
- Hiding how much you play from people close to you
- Playing to manage stress, boredom or low mood rather than for entertainment
- Feeling irritable or restless when you try to stop
One of these is worth noticing. Several together is worth acting on.
Free confidential help
- National Council on Problem Gambling: 1-800-522-4700. Free, confidential, 24 hours. Call, text the same number, or use the chat at ncpgambling.org.
- Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling: 1-888-ADMIT-IT (1-888-236-4848). The state specific line, also 24 hours, run by a non-profit rather than an operator.
- Gamblers Anonymous. In-person and online meetings across Florida, listed at gamblersanonymous.org.
- Gam-Anon. For family members, who often need support before the player asks for any.
Self-exclusion in Florida
Florida operates exclusion for the venues it regulates. The Florida Gaming Control Commission administers exclusion from state regulated pari-mutuel and cardroom facilities, and the tribal casinos run their own self-exclusion programmes, which you request at the property or through its problem gambling contact. Hard Rock Bet offers in-app limits and self-exclusion under the compact.
Be clear about the limit of that. State and tribal exclusion does not reach offshore sites. No Florida authority can exclude you from an operator licensed in Curacao, Panama or Anjouan, and no shared database covers them. If you exclude yourself from Florida venues and keep an offshore account open, you have closed one door.
Tools offshore sites do and do not give you
Most offshore operators offer deposit limits, session reminders, cool-off periods and account closure on request, usually through support rather than a self-service page. Quality varies and none of it is audited by a regulator you can appeal to. Ask support in writing and keep the reply.
- Blocking software is the layer that does not depend on the operator. Gamban and BetBlocker block gambling sites across your devices, and BetBlocker is free.
- Bank level blocks are offered by many United States card issuers and will decline gambling merchant codes outright.
- Remove stored payment methods and wallets. Friction helps more than intention.
If you are helping someone else
Do not cover a debt to make it go away, because it usually funds the next one. Gam-Anon and the helplines above take calls from family members, and 1-888-ADMIT-IT will talk to you about someone else's gambling.
You must be 21 or older to gamble in Florida.
